PRICE - when treating injuries

PRICE is a good protocol used in the early treatment of soft tissue injuries. The acronym has been used by healthcare professionals and coaches for many years to help remember the steps in the initial management of injuries.

The origins of PRICE are not attributed to a single individual, but rather have evolved over time as a common practice in sports medicine.

PRICE stands for:

Protection (Protection)

Avoid further damage by protecting the damaged area

Recovery (Rest)

Limiting the movement of the injured area can help prevent the injury from getting worse.

Cooling (Ice)

Cooling/use of an ice pack is an important part of the acute treatment and helps with the following:

  • Reduces swelling: The cold from the ice causes blood vessels to contract (vasoconstriction), which reduces blood flow to the injured area and thus reduces swelling.
  • Relieves pain: Cold dampens nerve activity, which reduces the experience of pain.
  • Reduces inflammation: The inflammatory reaction resulting from the injury may be less intense when using ice, as chemical reactions generally slow down in colder temperatures.

Ice should be applied for periods of 15-20 minutes, then 15-20 minutes without. Remember; always with a protective layer between the ice and the skin to prevent frostbite.

Compression (Compression)

Compression is the most important thing of all. This is more important than icing.
Analogy: In a car accident, and a bleeding needs to be stopped. Fortunately, the paramedics don't bring an ice pack...

Compression is used to:

  • Reduce swelling: Applying pressure to the injured area can reduce blood flow to the area, thereby reducing swelling.
  • Support and stabilize: Compression can provide support to the injured tissue and help stabilize, which can prevent further damage.

It's important to apply a support bandage as quickly as possible. Not too loose, but not too tight either. Leave it on for 48 hours (feel free to take it off when showering, but put it on again immediately afterwards)

Elevation (Elevation)

Elevation is used to reduce swelling and promote healing.
